Memory Zine Workshop
In Memory Zine Workshop you’ll organise and honour the written material that already exists.
In this online workshop we gather and make small memory zines.
Sometimes it feels easier to start from scratch than to develop what exists. But! There are simple & delicious organising methods we can use to give order and form to your written material that already exists.
You don’t need to start again. You’ve already said so much! Let’s honour it, by giving it a physical home, and turning it into something real.
Together we will identify organisational methods for your material, inspired by writers like Sheila Heti, Erica Van Horn, Amy Ching-Yan Lam, and others.
Making a small scrappy zine is a super effective way to uncover your preoccupations and narrative threads.
Why Memory Zine? Because anything can be a memory:
Diary entries. Words squirrelled away in documents. Drafts. Emails to loved ones. Family stories. iPhone notes. Shopping lists. Short stories. Camera photos. Professional presentations.
Get experimental and turn what already exists into a small memory zine. Learn exciting and invigorating organising methods you can use over and over again. Make something physical because it feels good!
Zines are by nature scrappy and imperfect. We are embracing this liberating ethos to create cheaply, quickly & imperfectly.
In this 3 hour workshop, we will:
-Act on our desire to make something, without needing to feel completely ready
-Look at experimental books & publications made from existing material
-Gather what already exists from our own ‘archives’
-Edit, cut and collate it for clarity & length
-Lay it out in a simple zine template provided by me
-[Optional] print it out & staple on your home printer. No printer? Don’t worry, you can send me your design file as a PDF and I’ll print & send it to you. UK only, or we can discuss a small fee for international postage.
Ideally you will have access to some design software; (free) Canva, InDesign, whatever you’re comfortable using. No software? You can build with your hands and I recommend you have: paper, a ruler, scissors, stapler to hand.
