Forming Fragments: A Scrappy Publication Workshop – Sat 5 Sept 2026
Live workshop | Sat 5 Sept 2026, 10am–1 pm (UK time)
In this online workshop we’ll work with a brilliant evergreen method to overcome cycles of Not Making, and discover what we want say in our writing and creative life.
In order to create we only need to do three things:
pay attention to what’s already in front of us
Start scrappily
Repeat: keep going, even when it feels pointless!!
Working with this attitude, you’ll learn the methods of writers, artists and makers of experimental publications who make beautifully simple work from life. Writers and artists like Sheila Heti, Erica Van Horn, Amy Ching-Yan Lam, Joe Brainard and others.
There are simple & delicious organising methods we can use to form fragments of writing and work. You’ve already said so much! In Forming Fragments, we excavate our personal archives: diary entries, emails, old drafts, family stories, shopping lists, camera rolls, phone notes, and other weird places you’d never think to look.
Because: you don’t need to write from scratch in order to create. You only need to have fun! playing with what already exists. And yes, it exists. We honour our material by giving it a physical home, and turning it into a scrappy experimental publication.
Making a small scrappy publication from what exists is a revelatory and simple organising method. You can use it again and again to reveal your unique narrative angles and threads.
Homemade publications are by nature scrappy and imperfect. We are embracing this liberating ethos to create cheaply, quickly & for our creative pleasure.
“I got so much out of the recent workshop I attended. I was really struck by how connected i felt and how easily i became immersed in the prompts. You are so great at what you do, and im so thankful for the boost of inspiration and motivation.” – Sophie
In this 3 hour workshop, we will:
-Act on our desire to make something, without needing to feel completely ready
-Look at experimental books & publications made from existing material
-Gather what already exists from our own ‘archives’
-Edit, cut and collate it for clarity & length
-Lay it out in a simple publication template provided by me
-[Optional] print it out & staple on your home printer. No printer? Don’t worry, you can send me your design file as a PDF and I’ll print & send it to you. UK only, or we can discuss a small fee for international postage.
Ideally you will have access to some design software; (free) Canva, InDesign, whatever you’re comfortable using. No software? You can build with your hands and I recommend you have: a ruler, scissors, stapler to hand.
Maximum 10 participants. All attendees get a playback recording of the session, and access to print templates.
Spots are non-refundable.
